Silver Eagles and Maple Leaf coins are most popular among bullion collectors.
American Silver Eagle coins
Authorized by Congress in 1985 and first minted in 1986, Silver Eagles are .999 fine silver, the finest silver coins ever issued by the United States. Each coin contains a full troy ounce of silver, plus copper, which is added to increase the coin’s durability to help resist scratching and marring.
American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins are America’s only official investment-grade silver bullion coins. They’re the world’s only silver bullion coins whose weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. So like the dollar, American Eagles are welcome in major investment markets worldwide.
American Eagle Silver Bullion Coins are affordable investments, beautiful collectibles, thoughtful gifts and memorable incentives or rewards. Above all, as legal tender, they're the only silver bullion coins whose weight and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. They're also the only silver coins allowed in an IRA.
The United States Mint produces proof versions of American Eagle Bullion coins for collectors. American Eagle Proof Coins undergo a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. The coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. After scrutiny by white gloved inspectors, each American Eagle Gold and Silver Proof Coin is sealed in a protective plastic capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case with its own official Certificate of Authenticity. American Eagle Platinum Proof Coins are packaged in a custom-designed portfolio presentation case. Since American Eagle Proof Coins are produced by the United States Mint, each coin's content, weight and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. American Eagle Gold, Silver, and Platinum Proof Coins have a limited mintage and can be purchased directly from the United States Mint.
In 2006, the United States Mint added another member to the American Eagle family of precious metal coins. Collectors may purchase American Eagle Uncirculated Coins in silver and gold directly from the United States Mint.
In a process similar to that used to create the magnificent American Eagle Proof Coins, American Eagle Uncirculated Coins are hand-loaded into the coining press, struck on specially burnished blanks and carry the "W" mint mark of the United States Mint at West Point.
Silver Maple Leaf coins
Encouraged by the success of the Gold Maple Leaf, The Royal Canadian Mint introduced Silver Maple Leaf Coins in 1988. The Silver Maple Leaf is minted with one troy ounce of 9999 fine silver. The coin has a face value of $5, the highest face value of any comparable silver bullion coin. Also of special interest are the one ounce silver bullion coins celebrating the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
In 1998, the Royal Canadian Mint struck a 99999 fine gold collector coin, 34 mm in diameter – the largest coin ever produced with so high a level of purity.
